Across-the-board budget cuts set to hit the Pentagon in January would destroy nearly 1 million jobs by 2014, with Virginia, California and Texas absorbing the biggest hits, according to an analysis released Thursday by the National Association of Manufacturers.
That’s weird, I thought government spending couldn’t create jobs. Oh, unless it’s jobs making bombs and assault rifles? Of course. My mistake.
I don’t want a million more unemployed people any more than the next person (especially if the next person is Mitt Romney, who definitely wants that more than I do). But if I were to propose that the exact amount of money being cut from the defense budget were instead diverted to building public transit and sustainable power sources, I suspect reality would flip upside down again and the government would be back to being unable to create jobs through spending.
